When does a song or creative work become Public Domain (PD)?

The period before a work becomes Public Domain depends on the type of work it is and the copyright law of the country you are in. In the US, copyright over a song or composition lasts for 70 years following the death of the last surviving author. For other types of work, the length of time may differ.
